Land Acknowledgement
The St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation is located in Nalikitquniejk, (nah-lee-kit-kuh-NEE-jek), a community within Mi’kma’ki (MEEG-mah-GEE), the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq (MEEG-mah) People, and we acknowledge them as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land. We recognize the land and labour that were taken, and the legacy of colonialism and slavery that persists today.
This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq Wəlastəkwiyik (wool-las-two-wi-ig) (Maliseet), and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. We are all Treaty people.
Mi’kma’ki includes all of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, part of New Brunswick, the Gaspé region of Quebec, part of Maine, and southwestern Newfoundland.
We acknowledge the rights, interests, priorities, and concerns of all Indigenous Peoples and are committed to respecting and acknowledging their distinct cultures, histories, rights, laws, and governments. We also acknowledge them as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land.
We also recognize that African Nova Scotians are a distinct people whose histories, legacies and contributions have enriched Mi'kma'ki (MEEG-mah-GEE), for over 400 years.
We continue to work towards racial justice, equity, inclusion, liberation, and community.
